Hi everyone,

Just me (kaye) saying hi & a great 2012 ahead :) I hope you like the new 'look', i have done a make-over for my own blogs so i thought i'd do this as well...However- great news since i've heard a website is in the making for The Little Big Markets so i will soon retire from being your blogger...speaking of which i haven't done much work in the past couple of months, sorry :(
Anyway, i did enjoy doing this blog admin role for the LBM and especially when i became a part of the markets via my stall KAYE's PLACE. It was an awesome experience & will be back soon. Working with Rachelle kind of gave me a glimpse of the work going on behind the scenes of the LBM and i take my hats off to her & Chris for all the effort, work & time and trying to meet everyone's needs + comfort on the market day, etc... It is a tad bit stressful i would imagine.
So...
Kudos to our event organizers who looks after the event & the stallholders & for again successfully setting-up the year's first market and not to mention the Christmas one- it was nothing short of spectacular wasn't it? and with Tiki Taane as well! We have 3 more months to go, Feb-April, a 5 month break in between and i think the fun starts all over again in October.
So, let's hope for sunshiny days every first saturday but if the cloudy weather persists then just bring your ray of sunshine with you :) BTW- some pics below from Tiki's performance (pics coourtesy of the LBM FB page).

Hello to our regular readers, we just want to say in behalf of Rachelle & Chris- a HUGE thanks to all who came and persevered the blustery winds & rain! The weather didn't give us a good start BUT the sun came shining through for all of us anyway :) To those who enlisted for today but didn't make it- hopefully the next market stall weather would be better. The Night market is next in line for us who are joining in the fun again so keep promoting our FB page and share the link to this blog :) this gives an idea of what we are all about.

There was a good turnout of people later in the morning and it was great! the festive & friendly atmosphere prevailed which goes to show that nothing can dampen the good 'ol kiwi community spirit of Tauranga locals. Again a big thanks everyone- from stallholders to our loyal patrons :)

What do you love the most about the Mount?

The laidback relaxed atmosphere and the street style.

It’s a place to relax, hang out, and enjoy life, rather than deal with stress and busyness.

What can we expect from you at The Little Big Markets?

Well!!! The ReallyReally Design Collective is action-packed!

We love design, and this shows through in the products we sell.

Under the umbrella of the collective we have fabulous photography

and artworks from Rachel Jacobsen Photography,

and amazing ‘Retro Rewind’ homewares by Implant.

Of course there is loads of quirky gorgeous jewellery

and accessories to devour as well!

How did you get started in what you are doing now?

ReallyReally Design – the jewellery –

started out of a frustration at all the mass-produced

fashion jewellery stores that were popping up everywhere.

Fewer people were wearing original, one-off or small run pieces...

so we did something about it!

When you are not creating, what do you do?

Kylie helps run ReallyReally and Implant from home,

Dan works as a Web Developer,

and Rachel is a Programme Tutor for PORSE.

How did you hear about The Little Big Markets?

We were part of the first markets last year,

so I think we found out through advertising previous to that.

We love being part of Little Big!

What inspires you the most in life?

and does this reflect your brand/craft?

Inspiration comes from everywhere.

For all of us, we’re inspired by unique design

be it fashion, architecture, printed matter, or sculpture.

We also take inspiration from nature, science and history –

which are all definitely reflected in our brand.

What do you like the most about The Little Big Markets?

It’s just so funky! The Little Big Markets are indie cool, with something for everyone.

They really do reflect the feel of The Mount.

Name of your brand/craft/hobby?

We’re an organic tea company called Informal Tea Co. based mainly in Tauranga. There are three of us in total. Sam and I are living the dream in Tauranga while the third one, Chris, is up in Auckland with his wife (and our head tea critic) Melissa.

What do you love the most about the Mount?

Last time Chris was down here, I remember him saying that he likes the place cause it makes him feel like he’s on holiday. I think I have to agree with him on that!

What can we expect from you at The Little Big Markets?

Everyone likes free stuff, so expect tea taste testing galore!

How did you get started in what you are doing now?

Tea has been my beverage of choice for a few years now, and I really wanted to start a fun small business with a couple of friends. So we spent a fair amount of time researching and hunting down tea suppliers earlier in the year but I had to head over to India with work for a couple of months, so the tea thing went on the back burner. Since I’ve been back we’ve been going full tit getting the company off the ground, and now we’re stoked to be launching at the little big markets — just in time for summer!

When you are not creating, what do you do?

I keep trying to take up surfing but I’m constantly interrupted by things — like oil spills! Touch is fun on Wednesdays at the moment. Apart from that, I guess creating is all I usually do. On Tuesdays I’m a potter. The rest of the week Chris and I run a boutique design firm called

The Suburbs (www.thesuburbs.co.nz).

Sam’s a builder by trade and an all round good guy.

How did you hear about The Little Big Markets?

Sam probably heard about the markets first because his bro Cole sells

Lillies and (really good) candles with his girlfriend there.

What inspires you the most in life?

and does this reflect your brand/craft?

I dunno if it’s something about spring, but I’m really respecting people

with good gardens at the moment. I’ve always been fortunate to have grown up

with awesome backyards full of fruit trees, veggie gardens, hens etc.

I have fond memories of things like missioning it down

our quiet little gravel road with my two older sisters,

picking wild berries through the thorny bushes on blindingly hot summer days.

The road isn’t so quiet or gravely anymore, but that sort of simplicity and purity

is something that I wouldn’t mind preserving.

So I guess it’s important to me personally that all our tea blends are organic

and up to that same basic but high standard.

What do you like the most about The Little Big Markets?

I really like the fun, relaxed, collaborative atmosphere. I went to my first one last month and I really enjoyed the markets despite it being a horrible cold day, so it can only get better as summer comes-a-knocking! We can’t wait!

and it seems like it's gonna' be bigger, brighter and

more exciting than ever!

More stallholders have joined in the fun

so make sure your alarms are set an hour before 9 am-

Remember it starts at 9 & finishes up around 1 arvo

you don't really want to sleep in that day

you'll miss all the fun of hobnobbing with people, haggling

and checking out stuff for Christmas prezzies :)

and by the way-

don't eat breakfast at home coz' we have pizzas, pies, fresh coffees

jams etc... on the market & you don't wanna miss that of course...

TAKE SOMEONE ALONG TOO-

take your girlfriends for an early morning shopping

tag along your kiddies, grandma, sis even your pet if you want

People. They are all different and I love that.

I got some gourmet seasoning last year, yum!

She saw me coming though; I somehow came away with 4 packets and shaker.

How did you get started in what you are doing now?

As an expectant mum and not finding much that wasn't mass produced in china,

I wanted my little girl to have something new and exciting. Bold patterns, fun colours and funky prints. After talking to a number of young mothers my sister in-law and I decided to start our own line of limited, handmade baby accessories. All our products have been tried and tested by mums so you know that they are quality goods at affordable prices!

Shannley - Sewing, Sewing, sewing.

Hannah - graphic design, Baby, feeding, washing and homemaking.

Started buying fabric to sell and then was inspired by blogs I was reading

and decided to try my hand at getting back into sewing.

This resulted in making a handbag for myself

I think it must have been through someone’s blog or facebook.

I then had a stall at the Easter market.

Where are you based?

Lake Okareka, Rotorua

What do you love the most about the Mount?

I grew up in Tauranga and as a family we used to

go regularly to the Mount beach for swims after school.

Back when it was all single-level with no high-rises.

I’m so glad I knew it then.

I will never stop enjoying the gorgeous views

when you walk around the Mount itself.

What can we expect from you at The Little Big Markets?

I’ll have some limited edition collages, prints, slot-togethers

and jewellery of native NZ birds – all made with sustainably grown plywood

which is hand-sanded to a beautiful smooth finish

with the lovely wood grain becoming part of the finished product.

I’m currently working on a range of new print patterns,

new slot-together birds, new mobiles as well as a new jewellery tree.

So there’ll be lots of new and interesting products to see!

How did you get started in what you are doing now?

Hmmmm… I’m not sure if I can remember “how” I got started with this.

It has just kind of evolved from a love of native birds and plywood.

I have been inspired by the work of others along the way,

for example – the collages I started out with were inspired by a woman’s work

I saw way back who did colourful collages of animals onto plywood.

So far I’m sticking to the native NZ theme, hence my name - Native Creative.

The native birds that have motivated my creativity will be seen

and heard less if we humans don't co-exist in harmony.

It is my wish that collectively all humans can

make a commitment to enjoy - not exploit - nature's richness.

When you are not creating, what do you do?

We live near a beautiful lake and

I love to go walking in the forest with our dog,

mountain biking the amazing Rotorua trails, yoga,

soaking in the hotpools in the winter time and

swimming every day in our lake during summer.

Plus I have two young children who

keep me pretty busy outside of “work” and leisure time.

How did you hear about The Little Big Markets?

I showed a friend of mine the collages I started out with

and she suggested The Little Big Markets would be a great avenue for me.

What inspires you the most in life? and does this reflect your brand/craft?

Nature, bird song, beautiful handmade items,

clever upcycled products, people who care about each other

and the planet, good humour, plywood (love it!),

light & shadow, the changing seasons,

my gorgeous children and talented husband...

I could go on and on! YES all this definitely reflects in my work.

What do you like the most about The Little Big Markets?

Well I’ve only attended once as a punter rather than a seller and I loved the relaxed, warm and friendly atmosphere. The music, food and coffee were definitely a draw-card too. I’m excited about the growth of the TLBM for 2011 and meeting some new like-minded folk J

My product is very unique and are made

with lots of great fabrics and colours,

so my stall will look really cheerful.

Plus the customer gets to deal with

the person who creates the products - me!

*How did you get started in

what you are doing now?

I have been sewing since I was a child and a friend

asked me to make a pair of booties for her wee girl.

She showed a friend, who then wanted a pair

and the ball just started rolling from there.

Now I have a website and have branched out into

other baby gifts like blankets, fabric baby blocks

and cot decorations.

*When you are not creating,

what do you do?

Running is my other main hobby,

its a great way to clear the head

and come up with some other creative ideas

*How did you hear about

The Little Big Markets?

A friend and I did the easter market this year

and I really enjoyed it

(even though the weather wasnt the best)

there was good public support and a really nice environment

*What inspires you the most in life?

& does this reflect your brand/craft?

Finding a passion and what your good at is hard to do.

It took me many years of playing around with fabric to

actually producing something that brings pleasure to people

and that I can make a bit of money off it.

I love getting creative with fabric, its my passion.

The Little Big Markets?

I think Tauranga/Mount has needed a decent market.

All the other markets seem to turn into a second hand garage sale.
There is a lot of very creative people in the Bay of Plenty

and its great for people to be able to display there wares.

Bubbling with creativity and talent, she shares her passion with her family and friends having an extensive background in the fashion business for years. *What do you love the most about the Mount?
I love community vibe, love going to the supermarket and knowing people!!

*What can we expect from you at The Little Big Markets?

Lots of gorgeous girlie clothes made from cottons

and silks,are hand-dyed and manipulated to have a vintage edge to them.

*How did you get started in what you are doing now?

I have worked in the fashion for years in a variety of roles,

costume for theatre, designing, pattern making and production work with China.

My latest project was my own women’s wear label ‘Oyl’ which was wholesaled around NZ,

I recently wound this business up deciding it wasn’t viable both financially and time wise.

I want to be at home with my children, they are my focus.

So the last 6 months I have been a full time mum and loving it,

but my creative tank is overflowing (what a great feeling)

so I started making clothes for my girls,

then their friends and so on and so on, pretty soon Olive was conceived.

*When you are not creating, what do you do?

When I’m not creating I am ferrying children around to ballet,

hockey, more dancing, drama, swimming, school trips etc!!!

I also manage a run or gym most mornings.

* How did you hear about The Little Big Markets?

Through the organisers last year and since then word of mouth,

I’ve heard good feedback.

*What inspires you the most in life? does this reflect your brand/craft?

I love old stuff, I fizz over old lace and trims, sounds corney but I’m like a kid in a lolly shop.

I love 1930’s dresses, that whole hollywood glam era, bias cut dress and soft curls.

Hence I also create very gorgeous wedding dresses for brides who share my passion.

*What do you like the most about The Little Big Markets?

What a great creative outlet to sell your product and be surrounded
and inspired by other creatives.

A whiff of France would be heading our way via Mary Fenton's stall MARCHE' which is of course French for 'market'- how aptly named! so very posh :) Anyway, our good friend Mary is one of our permanent stallholders who would be gracing the markets with her lovely hydrangeas, night wear and french inspired crafts. She hails from Te puke, is passionate about gardening and one of her favourite places to hang out is the beach especially the Mount. Mary says she's often on the lookout for interesting opportunities and that's how she stumbled on this craft business. She heard about us through our adverts :) and decided to join in the fun, isn't that great? below is a preview of the things she's gonna' bring to the fair. Just a beautiful reminder i thought i'd share with you

Woot-woot! Things are looking great and the excitement and buzz building up towards another season for our very own market beginning the 1st of October is almost palpable! There has been an awesome response from local entreprenuers and artists and even for casual stallholders like me (ha,ha...) who's joining in for the fun of it. Awesome!
For those who are putting up stalls- please print out our flyers and spread the word :) we want everyone to know so no one- this side of NZ- miss out on the great stuffs that we offer! I would personally put flyers up around the hospital billboards (chuckle....). ALSO- if you are a LBM stallholder and you have your own site or blog- please link us in. Will create a badge for us soon but in the meantime, if you don't mind, just write a line or two about us. That would really be appreciated.
Anyway- I'll be featuring stallholder profiles soon and will continue to develop this blog, as some links are still empty...we are a work in progress, so thank you for your patience. Hi everyone!
I'm Kaye and i've just joined the creative talent of The Little Big Markets as the blog administrator cum blog designer and possibly photographer. I hope you like what you see- as I have re-designed the blog layout and graphics plus added a shiny new blog banner just for you :)

You might see me clicking away with either my iPhone or camera during the fair and maybe interview some of you too- both customers and stallholders and those will be featured here. The pages are still under construction at the moment, so nothing much there still, however will fill them out with info soon. And I will continually tweak the design every now and then, this is just the beginning actually. I must say though it is hard work too, lol.

Anyway-

Let's all get ready for the grand entrance of the LBM this year, beginning OCTOBER 1st, Saturday- get ready to flash those brilliant smiles! and of course the stuffs that we will sell...Lol.

An Aucklander who has been collecting vintage for about seven years is bringing down her loot in preparation of a move to London, jewellery Annie Blackberry is bringing a bevy of her jewels, Laura is coming back with her sleepwear/underwear range Sleep In and Tracey is back with Eve Accessories.

The Little Big Markets, while we say are every second weekend, are not always every second weekend. As is the case over the next few weeks. Please take note that the next markets are as follows:

THIS Saturday, January 15th, then in TWO weeks time, January 29th. We then have them the very next week, February 5th and then two weeks later on the 19th. We then have a THREE week break and the next markets are on March 12th and the final market day is two weeks later on the 26th.

To say this blog has been neglected of late is an understatement. Although many of you may not know that I (Kelly) work full time and run my own business as well as freelance a bit here and there, as does my co-founder Rachelle. She works in the morning, goes to her business in the afternoon, freelances and helps to coordinate the Little Big Markets. So, I guess we deserve some slack on the blog front, right?

Ok. Glad we got that sorted.

Moving along. The title of this blog is woohoo (or something to that extent). The reason being, this week's Little Big Markets is our fourth of ten. It is our biggest yet and has some exciting additions.

How lucky are we, that right here in the Mount, we have experienced and passionate winemakers that are Volcanic Hills. Have you tried it yet?

Sean and Jo manned the stall last Saturday and handed out brochures and chocolate (but no wine tasting due to licensing) and directed people across the road to the Wine Barrel. I was in line to get myself a bottle come dusk and the Sav, I can report, went down a treat!

'Volcanic Hills, a wine inspired by the ancient volcanic landscape of New Zealand. Grown in the best wine-producing regions of the country and crafted by hand, Volcanic Hills aims to reflect the qualities of legendary peaks like Ruapehu, Tarawera and Rangitoto - distinctive, majestic and renowned for producing something quite spectacular.

Volcanic Hills is the result of a tectonic collision between winemakers Brent Park and Sean Beer. Having worked for top wineries for a combined 20 years, the pair joined forces and released their first batch in 2009'.

Over here at The Little Big Markets headquarters we have been trucking through council consent, delivering flyers, answering interview questions, mapping out the site plan and confirming stalls left, right and centre! Following our feature in Viva magazine yesterday we have been inundated with emails and calls which is SUPER exciting and we cannot wait for the markets to start next week.

Visitors will be privy to an array of arts, crafts, designer clothing, vintage clothing, homebaking and catering, children's clothing, jewellery and more.

We hope to see you there, next Saturday, 9am! There'll even be a sausage sizzle!

One thing we do want to stress is that The Little Big Markets is not 'car boot' kind of markets. Some of our stalls will be local designers selling old stock, samples and sale stock - and by that we mean, you might get a designer dress for $100 instead of $300. But that's not all, you will still find trinkets and treasures for $5, $10, $20...you never know what you will find on the day! Excited much? We are!

Who is Paul Graham - New Zealand Jade Artist?
I am a New Zealand Greenstone/Pounamu (Nephrite Jade) Artist, that carves inside a covered trailer that also has a shop in it. I have been working on this new concept for the past six months and now I am ready to get it out and about. The advantage of having the workshop there is that people can view me carving and ask questions about the process. So feel free to ask as many questions as you like when you come to the markets. What inspires you?

Definitely people and their stories. Designing a carving for someone is very personal. I often get to listen to interesting tales about different aspects in peoples lives. Coming up with a design to reflect these aspects so that the customer is happy is very rewarding. Other inspirations are my family as they have been a huge support in what I do.

What do you love about living in the Mount?
The Mount is great, the sea is close, the coffee is good and having great friends makes living here awesome.

What can we expect from Paul Graham at the Little Big Markets?
Good times with those we meet and chat with, plenty of laughs, and one or two carvings to show off. But seriously I will have a mix of Drops, Fish Hooks, Adzes, Twists,Hearts and a few random designs. I use a mix of stone and like to use lots of different colours. My stone is all NZ Pounamu and I am also a registered carver with Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu.

When you're not working, where would we find you?
When I am not working mmmmm, this is a hard question, if the surf is up I am out the back. If it is flat at a coffee shop with friends. Other than that any thing that requires not much effort is great.

How did you get into greenstone carving?
In 2002 I was asked by some good friends of mine in Gisborne if I wanted to learn, I took up the challenge and it has developed into a huge passion. I have tried other jobs during this time but keep coming back to carving. It is a bit of an addiction really.

What's one thing people may not know about you?
I watched Dumb and Dumber about 50 times when it first came out.

A desktop 2011 Art Calendar, featuring the works of Bay of Plenty painter and mixed media artist Jamie Harkins. A percentage of every sale will be donated to the Colourwheel Foundation to realise its vision of free art schools for New Zealand children. The flagship school will be opening in Tauranga in 2012.

With her first range launching summer 08/09, designer Liz Turner recently debuted at New Zealand Fashion Week 2010 as part of the PWC New Generation Show. Turner and her label, riddle me this received rave reviews and best of all, she has confirmed as a permanent stallholder for The Little Big Markets! You can pick up garments from her Winter 10 and Summer 09/10 ranges AND be sure to check out her new season stock online!

So, who is riddle me this?

She loves making two minute movies on photobooth and she (literally) judges books by their covers. You could say riddle me this is an extension of designer and director Liz Turners’ (me) obsession with images. You could also say that riddle me this is a recreation of the visual, inspired by what is seen but shaping it into something new.

What inspires you?
Mostly history, art, and music!

What do you love about living in the Mount?
Having a full on job but have the luxury of the beach just down the road!

Neverland will be joining gran's loose change and Idiom Boutique as a regular stallholder at each The Little Big Markets. Here, we get to know a little more about Claire Mossong and her brand...

Who is Neverland?
Neverland Collective is magic. Made with love. For you. From us. We make jewellery, knit, paint pictures, draw and photograph. We also do graffiti, stencils, drink alcohol, smoke ganja, sell drugs, knives, machine guns, uranium and kidneys, as well as many endangered pets, like koalas, seals and dolphins. (Dead or alive. Rare or “a la plancha”, depends how you like it…)

What inspires you?
A good song played on vinyl with a whiskey in hand and the sun on my face.

What do you love about living in the Mount?
Bike rides along the beach on ol blue. And how you can make any day off feel like you're on holiday.

What can we expect from Neverland Collective at the Little Big Markets?
You can expect to make a new friend or two. Lots of necklaces, along with some cheap samples, seconds & sale stock. As well as a some nifty things like vintage plates, one off pieces of artwork & lemonade. we might even make some herbal tea blends for you too. Yum.

What can we look forward to in coming seasons for Neverland Collective?
That's a surprise. But maybe Amethyst & poetry.

When you're not designing, where would we find you?
You can usually find me photographing or playing beside the sea. Or on Wednesday nights at Mundo Mexicano.

Hello, hi... here we are!!

Over the past month or more, gran's loose change director, Kelly Barriball (me) and Idiom Boutique owners Rachelle and Chris Duffy have been plotting, planning and trying to take over the world (Ok, not quite the world - kinda just the Mount and surrounding areas!) After seeing a gap in the market and a need for something a little bit different in our hometown, Mount Maunganui, we put our heads together and we are so proud and pleased to introduce.... The Little Big Markets.

The markets will be held pretty much every second Saturday, 9am - 2pm, throughout summer, launching November. Inspired by the markets scattered throughout Sydney (think Bondi and Glebe), we wanted a creative collective of designers, emerging and established artists, vintage, fashion and more.

We would suggest you bring a fifty not a fiver as you will get to browse the best deals from local designers and stores as well as jewellery, arts, crafts, home baking and vintage. While the markets will be cheaper than your average bear, it is all quality stock and goods and the price points reflect this.

What many of you may not know is that we had to plan this proposal with almost military precision. When you present something to the council there are several things you need to ensure you have thought of and covered. We had to go through several council contingents to finally get the result we wanted. It has often been a frustrating process but we thank the council for seeing the weight in the Little Big Markets and for allowing us to bring a little bit of adventure and flavour to Mount Maunganui this summer. We look forward to working together with them.

The Little Big Markets will be held corner Matai St and Maunganui Rd (next to Zespri) starting November 6th. Make sure you get there!!
